“…And I Show You How Deep The Rabbit Hole Goes,” by Scott Alexander.

I’m cheating here – this is a story I’ve already read, and really loved – because I’m way behind and haven’t read “Ambiguity Machines” yet. So this is a title I can give the group to catch up a bit. πŸ™‚

This is the story I share with friends and go, “Nu, go ahead, just read the first few paragraphs.” ::evil chuckle::

  1. I love this one. It starts seeming so silly, (And it stays funny) but builds itself from something that looks like a tumbr meme right into real sf.

    1. Absolutely this. πŸ™‚

And it does that by, repeatedly, making good speculations based on an absurd premise – which feels very very SFnal to me.

I got a similar vibe from "Harry Potter and the methods of Rationality," but that’s big and sprawling;this is so focused and QUICK and well-constructed.

Somebody described both as "Rationalist SF," which makes a lot of sense. HPMoR uses the whole of Harry Potter to bounce off of; this story uses a single tumblr meme. It’s kind of cool πŸ™‚
